I see in today’s Omaha World Herald that the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben (that’s “Nebraska” spelled backwards) had their annual coronation of King and Queen last night.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m sure that this is a fine charitable organization. They help sponsor 4-H, the local “River City Roundup”, and, in the case of the Coronation Ball, they help fund the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Scholarship for quite a number of young people.
But the whole “Coronation Ball” thing–am I the only one that finds it a little, um, self-serving to have these wealthy old members of “Omaha high society” get dressed up and take for themselves an 18-year-old Queen? (Not to mention, surrounding themselves with a number of strapping young Ak-Sar-Ben “pages”).
Shame on me for having these “uncharitable” thoughts–again, I have no reason to think anything bad about these good people and how they spend their Coronation Ball money. And I note that the “Charity Navigator” website that I wrote of earlier gives the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans four stars: a very good rating.
Maybe it is the tie-in with notorious pedophile Horatio Alger that is subconsciously bothering me. He left Harvard Divinity School abruptly after having sexual relations with several teen-aged boys.
Good for the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights giving money to charity. Maybe just a little less noisily…?
